Gun Mold for Ice Gun

A few months ago I had a project come in where the client needed a gun made out of ice for a photo shoot. My first thought was to go the vacuum forming route, but after I did a little research I didn't think I could get the level of details I need for a close up shot of the gun. So I decided to go with a mold and use actual ice. Below are a couple of shots of the molding process ending with the finished mold. I ended up making around 6 ice guns since I knew they wouldn't last long under the lights. I did however make a clear plastic gun to stand in so the photographer could get the lighting just right.

High Wire Distillery Co.'s Hat Trick Botanical Gin

Several months ago I created a painting for High Wire Distillery's gin bottle. They wanted an old looking magician's poster from around the turn of the century. It was fun doing research and finding all kinds of cool posters. Below are some progress shots of the painting ending with the finished label. If you find yourself in Charleston SC, check out High Wire Distillery. They do tours and tastings of their small batch spirits including gins, rums, whiskeys and vodkas. For more info:

Scarecrows in the Garden 2013

Here is the finished scarecrow from the Atlanta Botanical Garden's Scarecrows in the Garden 2013. Below are a couple of shots of the scarecrow. I made all his cloths out of indoor/outdoor fabric so   everything would keep the bright colors while outside for over a month. Instead of stuffing him with real hay, I used spray foam (Great Stuff). That way he wouldn't start to sag over time and lose his shape. The last thing I did was coat the whole scarecrow with NeverWet from Rust-oleum. I saw the ads on TV and thought I would give it a try and boy did it work great!!!! All the painted details looked fresh and new. I would recommend this product to anyone doing a project like this.

PSA Gameshow Set

After finishing up the Dr. Frankenstein set late this past week, I have been working on a PSA Gameshow set for a video shoot. It's a super fun project that's a little different from what I normally work on. Usually with sets for photo shoots I only need to worry about how it looks from the camera's point of view. I don't need to finish out the areas that are not seen. Since it's video and the camera moves around, I have to complete all sides. It's kind of like doing a set for a live theatre show. Anyway, here's a quick picture below of the progress. Hopefully I will be able to share pictures of the finished set for this project and the mad scientist set soon!

Snowman Skeleton

Below is a quick pic of a photo prop I am working on that doesn't look like much at this point. It's on the way to becoming a snowman. This is just the base skeleton that will be underneath all the fake snow, batting and chicken wire.

Scarecrow Head Process

Here are some pictures of the process I used for making the scarecrow head for the Atlanta Botanical Gardens. I tried to make it as durable as possible since it will be outside for a full month.

I started with a large plastic Easter egg with wood through the middle and then filled with spray foam to keep everything in place.

Then I added Model Magic to the egg to get all the face features.

Then I covered the whole head with muslin fabric dipped in waterproof glue.

Then covered the head with burlap dipped in waterproof glue for the final look.

For the last step I added paint to give it a finished look.

Space Props

I'm working on a super cool project making very theatrical looking space props for a photo shoot. They told me to go for the look of the 1902 movie "A Trip to the Moon." Very handmade, obvious set/prop pieces. Below is the start of the meteorites.

Holiday Stocking in August!

This week I've been working on a holiday image for an advertising campaign set to run in late November early December. The first pic is the simple dimensional form I built to use as a guide to construct the stocking around. Since I am building more then one, this will also help me make them the same size. The second pic is the form mounted on a tripod. This will help me get a feel how the stocking will hang while I am building it and make it easier to construct because I will have access to all sides.

Rope Words

The last few days I have been working on creating words out of rope for a photo shoot. It has been fun manipulating the ropes to make them look natural so they don't appear altered to much. Below is a quick picture of the start of the project.
